Quizzes, code and resources

The Resources area is your library of interactive learning activities — quizzes, coding exercises, assignments, polls, and embedded videos. You build them once, publish them, and attach them to any course or program section as a Resource topic.

Who can use it & where

Open Resources from your menu. It's available to individual instructors, institution master accounts, and staff instructors. Each resource type is organised into banks (folders) so you can group related items, e.g. "Week 1 quizzes" or "Python exercises". Inside an institution, resources belong to the master account, so the master and its staff instructors share the same library.

How resources work #

Every resource follows the same lifecycle, whatever its type:

  • Create a bank to group items, then add a resource inside it.
  • Attach the resource to one of your courses or programs (only enrolled learners can open it).
  • Publish it when it's ready — drafts stay hidden from learners.
  • Attach it to a course/program section as a Resource topic, or share its direct link.
Tip

A resource is always tied to a specific course. To attach a quiz to a program, create the quiz with that program selected as its course — every cohort in the program can then use it.

Quizzes #

Multiple-choice quizzes (single- or multi-correct, up to 50 questions) that learners take through an unguessable link. You can set a quiz to one attempt per learner or unlimited retakes, and each question can carry its own points.

  • Generate with AI — describe a topic, difficulty, and number of questions, preview what's generated, then save the ones you want into the bank.
  • Submissions & analytics — see who took it, scores, and per-question performance, and export everything to Excel.
  • Learners take the quiz one question at a time with Back/Next, and see their score on submit.

Coding exercises #

Hands-on programming activities that run in an in-browser editor. A code bank can hold three kinds of item:

TypeWhat it is
ExerciseA problem the learner solves in a playground. They run their code freely, then Submit to be auto-graded against expected output.
ExampleA read-only, runnable code sample attached to a course for learners to study and copy.
SnippetA reusable code template you keep for yourself — not learner-facing.

Learners write and run code in a dark or light editor, and Run is free play while Submit is the deliberate, recorded action. Exercises can allow a single submission or unlimited resubmissions, and you can review submissions and export them to Excel.

Assignments #

Assignments ask learners to upload their work. The learner opens the link, writes a short description, and attaches a single .zip file (with their Word/PDF/other files inside). You can allow one submission or let learners resubmit — a resubmission replaces the previous file, and the old upload is removed automatically.

Polls #

Single-question polls (2–10 options) for gathering opinions in real time. Polls are designed for live sessions: you start a session, learners vote once (or change their vote if you allow it), and you watch results update live. Finished sessions can be archived so you keep a record of each run.

Live only

Polls are available during live (instructor-led) sessions only. They're hidden on self-paced courses.

External videos #

Embed a video from YouTube, Vimeo, or another provider straight into your course. Paste the link, add a description, and the video plays inside the course — learners never leave the page, and there's no external redirect. YouTube and Vimeo links are detected automatically; other providers need a secure https:// embed URL.

Copyright is your responsibility

coursematter is not responsible for any copyright violation — it is the sole responsibility of the instructor to check and verify the copyrights of the content. Only embed videos you own or are licensed to share. Infringing videos may be removed and repeated violations can lead to account suspension.

Attaching a resource to a course #

Once a resource is published, add it to your course or program as a Resource topic:

  • In the course builder, add a topic and choose the Resource type.
  • Pick from the resource picker — search by name or filter by type (quiz, code, assignment, poll, video).
  • Save. Learners see the resource in the topic, with a clear description of what it is and what to do.

Quizzes, coding exercises, and assignments open in a new tab; videos play embedded in the page; and polls show a "available during your live session" note. For programs, you can attach resources directly to each cohort alongside its documents — see Programs & cohorts.
